Huntsville Hurricanes Strike Gold at Ontario Cup
The U14 Huntsville Hurricanes capped off an incredible weekend of basketball by claiming gold at the Ontario Cup in Niagara Falls from May 2–4. The team went undefeated, showcasing stifling defence, unselfish play, and clutch performances in every game.
Game 1 – Friday vs. Orillia Lakers
Huntsville opened the tournament with a dominant 46–30 victory over the Orillia Lakers. Utilizing a full-court zone trap, the Hurricanes stormed to a 28–13 halftime lead and never looked back. Lily Dixon led the charge early with 12 first-half points, while Eva Martins finished with a game-high 19. Kaley Verheye added 8 points, including 5 of her last 6 from the free throw line.
Game 2 – Saturday vs. SBA Zongo (Scarborough)
The Hurricanes kept their momentum going in Saturday’s noon matchup, exploding out of the gate to a 17–2 lead and putting up a season-high 20 points in the first quarter. Dixon continued her hot streak with 15 points, including two deep three-pointers. Verheye contributed 12, and Jordyn Earl added 9 in the convincing win.
Game 3 – Saturday vs. Oakville Venom
Facing the Oakville Venom with a berth in the gold medal game on the line, Huntsville showed resilience and grit. After trailing through much of the first half, they surged ahead in the third quarter and never let up, earning a 39–30 win through relentless pressure. Verheye led with 13 points, followed by Dixon (12), Martins (8), and Earl (5).
Championship Game – Sunday vs. South Muskoka
In the final, Huntsville squared off against a familiar rival, South Muskoka—a team they had already beaten twice this season. Determined to finish strong, the Hurricanes jumped to an 18–4 lead and held off a late push to secure a 38–32 championship win. Verheye once again led the scoring with 14 points, Martins added 8, and Tofflemire, Dixon, Earl, and Steeves each contributed 4.
