U16 Girls win Gold in Markham
The U16 Major Midget Girls won a gold medal this weekend at the MUMBA Tournament in Markham. Saturday they started strong with a 19 – 4 first quarter and cruised to a 39 – 24 victory over Stratford with great team defense and aggressive transition offense. Next up was eventual silver medalist Cambridge . The difference in a hard fought contest against a much larger team was aggressive pressure at both ends of the floor and 3 point made shots from four different Hurricane players in a 42 – 34 win. Local rival Bracebridge was next up on Saturday evening and although tired from two long games already that day Huntsville gutted out a 36 – 20 victory. Sunday morning required a win against York South to seal the gold medal. Down two players (now only seven) due to injury and illness the small squad built a 10 point lead mid-way through the fourth quarter. York South stormed back tying the game with 5.6 seconds to go. Celeste Dupuis took the inbounds pass and after two power dribbles found Jenna Yeo long for a layup as the buzzer sounded for a 38 – 36 gold medal victory.
The entire team contributed to the weekend. Well done Hurricanes!!
